Degenerative Disc Disease

As we age, our bodies may wear down and become weaker. We also may experience various traumas throughout a lifetime. Over time, age and damage can lead to degenerative disc disease (DDD), degenerative joint disease (DJD), or both. If you are experiencing symptoms from DDD, DJD, or a combination of the two, it is imperative to seek treatment. DDD and DJD will reduce your mobility and may significantly affect your quality of life. At Back To Health Family Chiropractic in Fort Worth, TX, we provide effective chiropractic care to alleviate symptoms you may be experiencing from these disc and joint conditions and to help improve your overall health.

Symptoms of Degenerative Disc Disease

Intervertebral discs are shock absorbers that give cushion between the bones of the spine. When these discs become worn out through age or damage, the body will react with a variety of symptoms. One common symptom is intense pain or spasms that occur when you try to move, bend or twist. This often develops from damage to the disc itself. Another common symptom is intense pain that radiates from the spine out towards the rest of the body. This could manifest in ways such as muscle spasms or peripheral pain such as sciatic pain which radiates to the leg or to the foot.

The pain created by the worn discs quickly become debilitating as it hinders your body from doing normal day-to-day tasks such as, sitting, lifting items, or flexing your back. Other symptoms include muscle spasms, weakened muscles or even muscle deterioration.

Symptoms of Degenerative Joint Disease

Similar to Degenerative Disc Disease in the way that the discs in our spine wear out, the cartilage in our joints and the bones themselves can deteriorate as well. This occurrence is known as Degenerative Joint Disease. Other names for this conditions include DJD and osteoarthritis. DJD can develop for various reasons, such as, aging and high-impact injuries, or ongoing influences such as obesity or irregular joint mechanics.

When it comes to the symptoms of DJD, individuals affected by the condition typically experience joint pain that grows increasingly more painful as they age. These symptoms may show up as increased stiffness, reduced range of motion, numbness and tingling, increased pain with activity, or even pain with weather changes.
