Autism and Spinal Adjustment

The Role of the Chiropractor

If you have a child or other loved one struggling with autism, then you know how this mysterious condition can stunt the development of communication and behavior. But you may not realize that a specific kind of chiropractic adjustment can help -- by Ft Worth Chiropractor adjusts Autism patientscorrecting vertebral misalignments that impair the brains ability to communicate with the central nervous system.

While autism consists of a broad spectrum of symptoms and functionality, the hallmarks of classic autistic disorder include limited or nonexistent speech and an impaired ability to interact with others or with the surrounding environment. How does the spine contribute to at least some cases of autism? Your spinal column is topped by a series of bones called the cervical vertebrae. The topmost bone is called the atlas. The atlas sits right at the critical junction where your brain stem leaves the skull and enters the spinal column. Misalignment of the atlas can put pressure on and cause distortion to the brain stem. At this level of the spine, nerve impulses from the left side of the body are routed to the right side of the brain -- the side responsible for speech, language and muscle coordination. Classical autism is often characterized by symptoms directly associated with neurological distortion at this level.
