Dr. Chris Michlin provide innovative chiropractic treatment techniques including prenatal chiropractic care to help expectant mothers safely alleviate pregnancy pain and prepare for a safe, natural birthing experience. If you are new to prenatal chiropractic care, it’s natural to wonder what to expect during and whether this care is right for your needs.

Our Fort Worth chiropractor answers five of the most frequently asked questions about prenatal chiropractic care:

1. Is prenatal chiropractic care safe for expectant mothers?

Yes, our prenatal chiropractic care is safe for both mother and child. We utilize adjustment tables that are designed to comfortably accommodate a woman’s changing body. All of our adjustments techniques are gentle and safe. These adjustments follow prenatal guidelines set forth to alleviate and relieve pain that expectant mothers experience during pregnancy. For example, we do not take X-rays of pregnant women. Our goal is to provide safe, appropriate care through each stage of the process.

2. I'm thinking about trying to become pregnant in the near future; should I get X-rays taken now?

While we do not take X-rays of pregnant women, we do advise taking an initial set of X-rays prior to a planned pregnancy. X-rays give our chiropractor an important window into your body's spinal health, making it easier to visually identify spinal misalignments causing nerve interference and pain. However, even if you did not have a set of X-rays taken prior to becoming pregnant, we are still able to provide comprehensive prenatal care services.

3. How can prenatal care alleviate pregnancy pain?

During pregnancy, a woman’s center of gravity begins to shift downwards. This shift is especially common during the third trimester, as the baby’s head places pressure on an expectant mother’s legs, back, buttocks and bladder. This additional pressure can also irritate the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve is one of the longest nerves stretching from the lower back through the buttocks and legs. Consequently, pressure on the sciatica nerve in the lower back can cause radiating and numbing pain throughout the lower body. Adjustments are designed to reduce this physical stress and tension that the growing baby places on the body for drug-free pain relief.

4. How does chiropractic care help prepare a woman’s body for natural childbirth?

If a natural birth with minimal or no interventions is part of your birth plan, then prenatal chiropractic care can help by preparing your body for natural childbirth. One of the most common reasons for a C-section intervention is if the baby remains in the breech position for birth. There are specific chiropractic adjustments which gently irritate the baby to get him or her to turn around. This adjustment technique also supports the correct alignment of the pelvis and spine, which helps to alleviate pain.

5. My husband and I are trying to conceive; can chiropractic care help?

Yes, regular chiropractic adjustments can help women by increasing the likelihood for conception. In addition to adjustments, complementary care such as nutritional counseling and lifestyle counseling also helps to support a healthy body. Adjusting the atlas (the top bone in the spine) may also improve conception likelihood. Since the atlas is at the base of the brain, when it is properly aligned, the blood flow from the brain and the body and the body in the brain is not impinged. Thus, our nerves and organs function better. Our Fort Worth chiropractor, Dr. Michlin, is the only Board Certified Atlas Orthogonist in North Texas. He creates personalized treatment plans to support women through each stage of pregnancy, from conception to a safe and natural childbirth.

6. How can chiropractic care help after childbirth?

The process of pregnancy and giving birth is a time of profound change for a woman’s body. Our chiropractic care and wellness services continue to support a woman’s health after she gives birth through balanced nutrition and correct spinal alignment. For example, atlas orthogonal adjustments restore correct alignment to the spine column to regulate and support all the body's functions.  Additionally, gentle and specific chiropractic care supports a newborn as well. When the doctor guides the baby’s head during birth, spinal misalignment is possible. Getting your baby assessed is a great idea.
